Crystal Control: What is it and do I need it for my event?

Clients often ask whether our generators are “crystal controlled” without actually knowing what it means.  Allow us to explain.

A generator is crystal controlled (sometimes erroneously called “crystal sync”) if it contains an electronic governor.  The governor is the device which maintains the generator engine RPM very close to its specified value, usually 1800 RPM, which maintains the frequency of the AC power very close to 60 Hz (formerly known as cycles).  Some generators have mechanical governors which typically keep the power between 58 and 62 hZ.  Electronically controlled generators are far more precise and typically keep the power within ¼ Hz of 60 Hz. They also have a much faster response to load changes.

Do you need it?

Well, like a lot of things, it depends….

If you are powering a bunch of coffee makers and toasters, the answer is no.  These are simple machines which are very forgiving of power variations.  If you are powering electronic equipment, the answer is yes.  Complex electronic equipment can operate erratically or even shut down if the power strays too far from 60 Hz.

The difference between construction generators and studio/event generators

What is the difference between construction generators and event generators?

The main difference between construction and event generators is the attitude and practices of the companies who provide them.  Construction generators are provided by general contractor rental companies who aspire to the standards of the construction industry.  Event generators are provided by specialty service companies, such as Sidram Power, who conform to the FAR STRICTER standards of the event industry. 

In virtually every case, the event generator will be better maintained, better looking, and delivered in a more timely fashion by a more knowledgeable technician.  Event generator companies don’t see themselves as suppliers, as much as active partners in the success of an event.  That’s why I say it’s really more of a service than a rental, because an event generator company has specialized experience with how events are done and will ask questions and make suggestions to insure the success of your event.

Here at Sidram Power we have added another new distribution system to our arsenal. Our new stringer system comes with a 6 or 12 L21-30 outputs. After you select your 6 or 12 outputs we stock a variety of L21-30 cable including 10', 25', 50' and 100' extensions. When you get the power to were you are going you can choose from an assortment of 30 amp 3 phase stringers, single quad boxes and many other options. This system is extremely efficient for vendor power at festivals and anywhere you need multiple power runs such as on site kitchens. As with all of our power products this system is nema 3R with optional GFIC and has camlok thru.

SUCCESS STORY

West Elm held the Grand Opening for their Mid Town Miami store last week.  On the morning of the store opening FPL, the local power company, shut down power to the mall where the store was located in order to repair a power grid issue.  West Elm immediately called a generator company to arrange for temporary power for their event.  3 hours went by, and still no one arrived with a generator – and the party was scheduled to start soon.  Before panic set in, they called Sidram Power.  We promptly delivered and set up a 400 amp, 3phase, 480 volt unit to power up the entire store.  Their grand opening went off without any other power issues, and VIP guests attending the party had a night to remember at West Elm.
